A random chord generator that stays in key

There's no preset list behind this tool. Every progression is built on the fly from music-theory rules: it only moves between chords that naturally follow each other (home → away → tension → home), always includes the home chord of the key, and makes sure the last chord loops smoothly back into the first. The result: thousands of different progressions, and every one of them is in key and works as a loop. Learn the rules behind it in How to Write Chord Progressions for Beats.

What do the Roman numerals mean?

Under each chord you'll see its Roman numeral: its position in the key. Uppercase (VI, VII) means a major chord, lowercase (i, iv) a minor chord, and ° a diminished chord. So i – VI – III – VII is the same progression in every key: Dm – B♭ – F – C in D minor, Am – F – C – G in A minor. Learn the numerals and you can play any progression in any key.

Which mood should I pick?

  • Sad: minor-key progressions for emotional trap, emo rap and sad piano beats.
  • Dark: tension-heavy progressions with diminished and dominant chords, perfect for drill and dark trap. More in Dark Chord Progressions for Trap & Drill.
  • Dreamy: major 7th progressions for ambient, pop and dreamy R&B.
  • Epic: cinematic minor progressions that build and resolve, for anthems and hard-hitting hooks.
  • Lofi / R&B: jazzy ii–V–I moves and 9th chords for chill beats. More in Lofi Chord Progressions.

FAQ

Is the chord generator really free?

Yes. Generate and download as many MIDI files as you want, no account needed.

Is it really random?

Yes. Each click builds a new progression from scratch, in a random key when you first open the page. The music-theory rules only make sure the result always sounds right.

Can I use the chords in my released songs?

Yes. Chord progressions can't be owned, and the MIDI files you download here are yours to use in any beat or release.

Can I change the chords after downloading?

Of course. It's a MIDI file: change the notes, the voicing, the rhythm or the key directly in your piano roll.
