How to Use MIDI Packs in Ableton Live (Step by Step)

How to use MIDI packs in Ableton Live

You just downloaded a MIDI pack and you work in Ableton Live. Good choice: Ableton is one of the fastest DAWs to turn a MIDI file into a finished idea. Here's the complete workflow, from the ZIP file to a full beat, in 8 steps. It works in Live Intro, Standard and Suite.

1. Unzip the pack and add it to the Browser

Ableton can't read files inside a ZIP. Extract the pack first (right-click → Extract All on Windows, double-click on Mac), and move the folder somewhere permanent, like a "Samples" folder on your drive.

Then, in Ableton's Browser, under Places, click Add Folder… and select the pack folder. It now appears in the sidebar, and you can preview every loop with one click.

2. Set the project tempo to the pack's BPM

Every GetMidis file is labeled with its key and BPM (for example Alaska_Gmin_112BPM). Type that BPM into the tempo box at the top left of Ableton before you start.

MIDI files always follow the project tempo, so you can change it later without any loss of quality.

3. Create a MIDI track and load an instrument

Press Ctrl+Shift+T (Windows) or Cmd+Shift+T (Mac) to create a new MIDI track. A MIDI file contains no sound by itself: it needs an instrument.

Drag an instrument from the Browser onto the track. Good starting points for melodies:

  • A piano or keys preset from Ableton's Core Library
  • Drift or Wavetable for synths, pads and plucks
  • Any VST you own: Serum, Vital (free), Omnisphere, Keyscape, Kontakt libraries

4. Drag the MIDI file onto the track

Find the .mid file in the Browser and drag it onto your MIDI track, either into a clip slot (Session View) or onto the timeline (Arrangement View). Press play: the instrument plays the melody.

Now try different presets on the same MIDI. This is the whole point of MIDI: same notes, completely different vibe. A melody that sounds epic on strings can sound heartbreaking on a felt piano.

5. Use the audio loops (and keep them in time)

GetMidis packs also include the mixed WAV loop for each MIDI. Drag it onto an audio track. Ableton's Warp feature stretches it to your project tempo automatically.

If the loop sounds out of time, double-click it and check the Seg. BPM value in the Clip View: set it to the BPM written in the file name. For melodic loops, the Complex Pro warp mode gives the cleanest sound when you change the tempo a lot.

Pro tip: layer the WAV loop with your own MIDI version. The loop brings the polished mix, your preset brings your signature sound.

6. Change the key

Your vocalist sings in another key, or you want to combine two loops? No problem.

  • MIDI clip: open the clip, select all notes (Ctrl/Cmd+A) and press the up/down arrow to move them one semitone. Shift+arrow moves them a full octave.
  • Audio loop: in the Clip View, turn the Transpose knob (in semitones). Keep it within ±3 semitones for the most natural sound.

Not sure which keys work together? Loops in the same key always match, and so do relative keys: G minor fits with B♭ major, D minor with F major, C minor with E♭ major.

7. Make it yours: edit, flip and humanize

A MIDI from a pack is a starting point, not the final result. A few quick ways to flip it in Ableton:

  • Change the ending: keep the first 2 bars, rewrite the last notes of the phrase.
  • Move notes an octave to create a counter-melody on a second track.
  • Use Live 12's MIDI Tools (in the Clip View): Arpeggiate turns chords into arpeggios, Strum gives chords a guitar feel, Velocity Shaper adds movement.
  • Humanize: add the Velocity MIDI effect and raise the Random value slightly, or apply a groove from the Groove Pool.
  • Chop the WAV: slice the loop with Slice to New MIDI Track and replay it in a new order.

8. Build the beat and save properly

Add drums (kick, snare, hi-hats) under your melody, duplicate sections with Ctrl/Cmd+D, and remove elements to create an intro, a verse and a hook.

When you're done, use File → Collect All and Save. Ableton copies every sample into your project folder, so nothing goes missing if you move the pack or open the project on another computer.

Want to send the melody to another producer? Right-click the MIDI clip and choose Export MIDI Clip….

Common problems (and fixes)

  • "No sound when I press play": the MIDI is on a track without an instrument. Drag a preset onto it.
  • "I can't drag the MIDI into Ableton": the pack is still zipped. Extract it first.
  • "The loop is too fast or too slow": check that Warp is on and that Seg. BPM matches the BPM in the file name.
  • "Files are missing when I reopen my project": you moved the pack folder. Use Collect All and Save next time, or point Ableton to the new location.

FAQ

Do MIDI packs work in Ableton Live Lite or Intro?

Yes. Importing MIDI files and audio loops works in every edition of Ableton Live. Some instruments, like Wavetable, are only in Standard or Suite, but you can use any other instrument or VST.

Can I convert an audio loop to MIDI in Ableton?

Live Standard and Suite can do it (right-click the clip → Convert Melody to New MIDI Track), but the result often needs cleaning. With GetMidis packs you don't have to: every loop already comes with its clean MIDI file.

Can I release songs made with these MIDI files?

Yes. GetMidis packs are royalty-free for your beats and releases. Check the license details on each product page.
